Isis Biopolymer

Providence’s former Jewelry District is fast earning a reputation as a center of excellence for the knowledge economy. And in the heart of that district is Isis Biopolymer, a company that has developed groundbreaking patch technology and other medical devices. An exciting new company that moved its offices from Warwick to Providence, Isis was founded in 2006 and is led by a team of experienced scientists and entrepreneurs. This group has extensive knowledge of medical devices and design, and has launched the first ever, ultra-thin IsisIQ Patch – “a programmable, active patch that controls and monitors the delivery of drugs through the skin.”

Emma A. Durand, founder and CEO, said they chose Providence from among a group of potential cities inside and outside of Rhode Island because of the exciting opportunity to be within the Knowledge District, and to be in close proximity to Brown University and Lifespan.

In her remarks at the opening of the facility in December 2009, Durand underscored the pivotal role Providence played in bringing her growing company to the City, and the cooperation extended to them throughout the planning process by Brown University itself. Brown University is locating its Alpert Medical School directly across the street from Isis Biopolymer Isis is also working closely with the RI Economic Development Corporation in creation of wet lab space and other development opportunities.
